I am shocked and appalled. I am saddened beyond words. I am angry perhaps unreasonably... But I am all of these things because yet again another 9/11 anniversary has gone by, and there was not a single program on television, a mention from a classmate, or a word on the radio about it at all.
I have seen people show more emotion over the anniversary of a pet dog's death. Its as if this war has people so divided over right and wrong that they can't even remember what started it all. Almost as if they are afraid to say anything on the subject, lest some extremist jumps down their throat for supporting the war on terror or peace.
I don't care whose side people are on, but 9/11 deserves our rememberence. This day deserves a mention, a word, a memorial, SOMETHING. Hundreds of people died because of a tragic event, and they are not coming back. For that simple reason, 9/11 deserves a moment where we think about what happened, and pray to whatever god we believe in for the family members left behind. Maybe this doesn't affect you as much. Maybe you don't remember it. But I do. I remember standing in my living room that morning. I remember clapping a hand over my mouth, gasping with shock and fear. The image on the tv is forever burned in my mind as the first tower fell. I remember the feeling, knowing that I had stood in that tower, looking down at the city... knowing that I could have been there, it could have been me.
I don't care about conspiracy theories, I don't care about the war, I don't care about the crap that is spouted about all of this. Civilians died. They were terrified. They knew they weren't going to survive. They were in pain. They threw themselves from the sides of the buildings to escape the flames and the smoke. Firemen and policement climbed up the stairs of those towers, trying to get out as many people as they could. Climbing to their deaths. Hundreds of American citizens died on that day due to an event that shook our nation. It deserves being remembered. The people deserve to be remembered. Their families deserve to be remembered.
And because no one else in my life, on my tv networks, in my classrooms cares to remember. This is my rememberence on the seventh anniversary of 9/11. |
